Backupify

Amplifyd from www.downloadsquad.com
Backupify offers free lifetime backups of GMail, Flickr, Twitter*
Backupify is a dead-simple way to archive all those services from a central location. *Until January 31, 2010 they’re offering free lifetime accounts to all new users.

I’ll admit, it’s a bit of an ironic concept - backing up your cloud data in case a service shuts down onto another cloud service which could also shut down - but Backupify is elegantly simple to use and you certainly can’t argue with the price right now.

Ironic: Because, let’s be honest, they are more likely to shut down than most of the services they offer to backup.

nitially I wanted to poke fun at the idea of backing up stuff in the cloud to the cloud but even if this service shuts down, they are bound to give all the users a warning before that happens. Usually a long enough time to make other arrangements. But in this case you’d lost nothing anyway unless one of your backed up services goes out of businessRead more at www.downloadsquad.com

Federal Aviation Administration Officially Says Who to Call After UFO Contact

Robert Bigelow is one of my personal heroes, a space man who can—and will—change the world because he believes so. Now, the FAA says that you should call one of his mysterious companies if you see an UFO.

But Bigelow is also a man who truly loves space, and everything that has to do with it. His multi-million dollar investment is not only about hotels in space. Another of his companies is Bigelow Aerospace Advanced Space Studies. According to the last order by Federal Aviation Administration—issued on December 10—BAASS is now the organization to contact if you are a pilot or an air traffic controller who gets close to an Unidentified Flying Object:

They don’t list the number or email of the military, nor some special branch of the Secret Service, nor the CIA, nor the NASA. But BAASS. Is this a crazy companyRead more at gizmodo.com

Leitura Digital e Privacidade

Is Your Kindle Spying On You? (Yes.)

If you don’t want other people to know what you read, you probably shouldn’t own an ereader. And you really shouldn’t get a constantly connected Kindle or Nook, at least according to the EFF’s eye-opening guide to ebook privacy.

On the other hand, since Sony’s Reader lacks 3G for a constant connection and isn’t as tightly integrated with their ebook store, there’s less opportunity for data collection, particularly if you stick w/ sideloaded books. Better still, says the EFF is the open-source FBReader. But you can’t download books from anywhere in 3 seconds over 3G, and the experience isn’t as nice.

It’s the classic tradeoff: Less privacy for more convenience and a better experience, or greater privacy for a bigger hassle. What side are you on? [EFF]

The New, Terrifying, No-Electronics US Flight Security Rules

No electronics allowed.

Update 2: The TSA also released this statement, which seems to confirm that electronics usage policies will be on a case-by-case basis (emphasis added):

“Passengers flying from international locations to U.S. destinations may notice additional security measures in place. These measures are designed to be unpredictable, so passengers should not expect to see the same thing everywhere. Due to the busy holiday travel season, both domestic and international travelers should allot extra time for check-in.”

The New York Times is reporting that no one will be able to move from their seats during the last hour of flight. That means no bathroom breaks, no accessing carry-on luggage, nothing. When that plane starts descending, you’re planted.

Assorted Onenote Tips

Assorted OneNote Tips!
  • Type a word, right click on it, click “Create Linked page”, then click the link and presto you’re on a new page with that title that is linked to from the first page. Great for things like “here is the recipe for Grandma’s cookies”. highlight “Grandma’s cookies”, right click, create linked page.
  • Right click on anything (notebook, section, page, piece of text or image on page), and choose “copy hyperlink to this”. Paste that in OneNote or in other documents. You can even hyperlink to other places on the same page. I often type ”see note above” right click on the referenced note elsewhere on the page, copy hyperlink then put cursor on the word “above”, then Ctrl-K, Ctrl-V, Enter to add that link.
  • Customize the built-in tags and use Ctrl-1-9 to tag things, Ctrl-0 to remove tags. Don’t forget View/All tagged notes to query across all your notes and build summary pages pulling out quotes you liked, questions to follow up on, ToDos, etc.Read more at community.iheartonenote.com
